Offshore wind

High-tech Seawatch® Wind Lidar buoys scope the Irish Sea before construction can begin on two new wind farms.
As part of our joint venture with JERA, JERA Nex bp continues to develop three offshore wind projects in the UK: Mona, Morven and Flora. In addition, JERA Nex bp owns a stake in the Gunfleet Sands project with Ørsted and the Development Bank of Japan.

  • Mona – When complete, the proposed project has a potential generating capacity of approximately 1.5GW, sufficient to power the equivalent of around 1.5 million UK homes. The Mona lease area is approximately 300 square kilometres and located in the Irish Sea.
  • Morven – jointly developed by EnBW and JERA Nex bp. When complete the proposed project is expected to have a combined potential generating capacity of up to around 3GW, sufficient to power the equivalent of around 3 million UK households with low carbon electricity every year.  The approximately 860-square-kilometre lease is located around 60 kilometres off the coast of Aberdeenshire.
  • Flora – in March 2023, bp was successful in its Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) bid to develop an innovative demonstrator floating offshore wind project. Flora is a small-scale project being developed by JERA Nex bp and, when complete, is expected to produce approximately 50MW of potential generating capacity.
  • Gunfleet Sands – a 173MW offshore wind project approximately seven kilometres off the coast of Clacton-on-Sea, UK, consisting of 48 fixed-bottom offshore wind power generators.
