Our relationship with the United Arab Emirates dates back to the early 1930s, when Air bp established a refuelling depot in Sharjah to serve aircraft travelling between the UK and India.
bp has been an investor in Abu Dhabi since 1939 and played a pivotal role in the discovery of oil in the Emirate in 1958.
Today, bp maintains key partnerships in oil and LNG in Abu Dhabi, and operates lubricants, aviation fuel, and trading businesses managed from Dubai.
Further north along the coast, Dubai serves as the regional hub for our refining and marketing operations under bp Middle East LLC. From here, bp markets oil products, including aviation and marine fuels and lubricants, and provides technical support and related services across the region, spanning from Egypt in the west to Sri Lanka in the east. Our trading division’s regional office is also based in Dubai, actively engaging in regional markets for crude and refined products, and connecting into bp’s global refining and marketing networks.
In Abu Dhabi, bp holds joint-venture interests with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), including:
bp seconds technical and managerial experts to ADNOC and its operating companies and invests in developing local capabilities—including seconding national staff to bp locations worldwide.
On 17 December 2016, bp was awarded a 10% interest in the ADNOC Onshore concession and became the asset leader for the Bab field. On 10 July 2024, bp joined ADNOC and other partners in the Ruwais LNG project with a 10% stake.
bp’s net share of production from Abu Dhabi is approximately 200,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) from ADNOC Onshore.
Our refining and marketing business includes joint-venture blending plants in Dubai that produce premium lubricants under the bp and Castrol brands.
Air bp in Dubai oversees aviation fuel sales to airlines in more than 20 countries, from Egypt in the west to Bangladesh in the east. We participate in joint-venture operations in the UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Lebanon. Air bp also maintains technical and commercial service agreements with key regional partners such as ADNOC Distribution (Abu Dhabi), Oman National Oil Company, Indian Oil Corporation, Maldives Airports Company, and Misr Petroleum. We are the sole provider of storage and into-plane refuelling services at Sharjah International Airport, and operate a joint venture with the Government of Sharjah on the Anabeeb pipeline and import storage.
bp is committed to making a positive impact in the communities where we operate. We support job creation, engage local suppliers, and contribute to development initiatives.
We invest in education and capability development through various programmes:
