bp and partners announce the successful installation of an artificial reef village off the coast of Saint-Louis, Senegal

With an investment of approximately 3.2 billion CFA, the artificial reef is located approximately 4km offshore from Saint-Louis, consisting of ten clusters of reef structures made up of pioneering artificial reef cubes and pyramid structures. The artificial reef has a design life of 99+ years. These structures are designed to enhance marine biodiversity and support sustainable fishing practices, with an aim to benefit local fishing communities. The artificial reef features multiple nature-inclusive design additions to promote its ability to enhance marine productivity. These include a 3D textured surface, using Ferlo desert topography, to enhance marine growth, and 1500 locally sourced clay pots, to add to the complexity to the habitat. Over 400 artificial reef cubes have been installed in total.

The installation follows community engagement, engineering feasibility studies, and environmental surveys. bp and its partners worked closely with artisanal fishermen, local authorities, regulators and marine research associations to ensure the artificial reef’s design and placement align with community needs, international standards and ecological conditions.

As part of this initiative to promote increased fish survival and replenishment of localized fish stocks, a steering committee will look to provide training and awareness campaigns on artificial reef management, conservation and safe fishing practices.

Massaer Cisse, vice-president and Head of Country, Senegal, stated:

“bp is committed to supporting the communities in which we operate. The artificial reef project is a testament to our dedication to biodiversity, sustainable livelihoods, and long-term community value. We are proud to collaborate with our partners and the people of Saint-Louis to deliver this impactful initiative.”

This initiative is part of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project’s multi-million dollar social investment programme and reflects the partnership’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community development.
